The Secret in Klinger’s Boots

“I Put It There On Purpose.” — The Heartbreaking Reason Jamie Farr Hid Newspaper Inside His Expensive Hollywood Shoes
Before the fame.
Before the million-dollar contracts.
Before the iconic dresses and the global recognition of M*A*S*H.
Jamie Farr was just a starving actor trying to survive in Los Angeles.
He was completely broke.
He couldn’t afford a hot meal, let alone a decent pair of shoes.
His only pair of leather dress shoes had massive holes worn straight through the soles.
When it rained, the cold water would soak his feet to the bone.
So, he did what desperate people do.
He folded up pieces of old newspaper and stuffed them inside his shoes.
Just to keep the freezing pavement away from his skin as he walked miles to auditions.
Then, a miracle happened.
He landed the role of Corporal Klinger.
He became a television icon overnight.
He was making incredible money.
The studio wardrobe department gave him custom-made, expensive footwear.
But one afternoon on the set, a young wardrobe assistant noticed something strange.
Jamie had taken off his boots to rest his feet between scenes.
Sticking out from beneath the expensive leather insole… was a crumpled piece of old newspaper.
The assistant reached out to pull it out and throw it in the trash.
“Let me get that garbage out of there for you, Mr. Farr,” she offered politely.
Jamie quickly reached out and gently stopped her hand.
“Please don’t,” Jamie said softly. “I put it there on purpose.”
The young assistant looked completely confused.
Why would a rich television star put trash in his custom shoes?
Jamie took the boot and carefully pushed the newspaper back into place.
“When I was starving, newspaper was the only thing standing between me and the dirt,” he explained quietly.
“Now, I make more money than I ever dreamed.”
“People bring me hot coffee. People ask for my autograph. People treat me like I am special.”
“It is very easy to let Hollywood make you arrogant.”
He looked down at the crumpled paper.
“I keep this in my shoe so I can feel it every single time I take a step.”
“It reminds me exactly where I came from.”
“And it reminds me to never, ever look down on anyone else on this set.”
While other Hollywood stars demanded bigger dressing rooms and luxury cars…
Jamie Farr just wanted to remember what it felt like to be poor.
Because fame can easily change your bank account.
But it takes a true gentleman to make sure it never changes your soul.

The young assistant stood there in silence.

She felt a lump form in her throat.
She watched as Jamie slid his foot back into the boot.
He tied the laces tight.
And he stood up, shifting his weight just enough to feel the faint, familiar crinkle beneath his heel.

He gave her a warm, gracious smile and walked back out onto the soundstage under the bright, blinding Hollywood lights.

Later that same week, a new background extra arrived on the MASH* set.
The young man was nervous.
He looked exhausted.
And as he waited near the edge of the set, Jamie noticed him shifting uncomfortably in a pair of cheap, worn-out shoes.

When the director finally yelled “Cut!” for lunch, the cast and crew rushed toward the catering tables.
The extra hung back, hovering near the shadows, unsure if the free food was meant for someone like him.

Jamie noticed.
He didn’t call for a PA to fetch the kid a plate.
He didn’t make a grand, public spectacle of his generosity.

He simply walked over himself.
His custom leather boots making a quiet, invisible crinkle with every step.

He handed the young man a steaming plate of hot food and a fresh cup of coffee.
“Eat up, kid,” Jamie said with a gentle wink. “The army marches on its stomach.”

The young actor looked up, entirely starstruck.
“Thank you, Mr. Farr.”

Jamie patted him on the shoulder.
He didn’t just see a nameless extra.
He saw himself.
Ten years ago.
Cold, hungry, and praying for a break.

“Hang in there,” Jamie told him softly. “It gets better.”

From across the stage, the young wardrobe assistant watched the entire quiet exchange.
She looked at the young actor holding his warm meal.
Then she looked down at Jamie’s boots as he walked away.

And she finally understood.

The folded newspaper wasn’t just a reminder of his painful past.
It was a compass for his present.

It kept Corporal Klinger the most human character on television.
And it kept Jamie Farr’s feet firmly planted on the ground…
No matter how high his star continued to rise.
