He looked at his old friend, and for a heartbeat, the warehouse walls seemed to dissolve into canvas and rope and the dusty hills of Malibu.

Jamie clicked the switch.

Even though the unit had no power and the electronics were dead, the mechanical thwack of the metal toggle was so sharp and so specific that it echoed through the silent warehouse like a gunshot.

The 4077th wasn’t a place on a map, and it wasn’t a show on a screen—it was the way two men looked at a toggle switch and remembered.

The lights went out in the warehouse, but the memory stayed illuminated, bright and clear and heavy with truth.

We spend so much time moving forward that we forget the things we left behind are still breathing, waiting for us to touch them.
