MASH

A Father, a Son, and the 4077th

Happy Heavenly Birthday Robert Alda

There are guest stars, and then there is family.

When Dr. Anthony Borelli arrived at the 4077th, the camp didn’t just get a brilliant visiting medical consultant. We, the audience, got to witness a beautiful, historic masterclass in acting between a father and his son.

Robert Alda brought a distinguished, old-school gravitas to the muddy canvas tents of Korea. As Dr. Borelli, he represented the traditional medical establishment—a sharp contrast to the rebellious, chaotic, meatball-surgery style of Hawkeye Pierce. The two characters constantly clashed over procedure, protocol, and the harsh realities of treating the wounded in a war zone.

But beneath the bickering, the sarcasm, and the professional rivalry, there was an undeniable, deeply rooted affection that you simply couldn’t fake. Because every time Borelli and Hawkeye looked at each other, we were watching Robert and Alan Alda.

In the classic episode “Lend a Hand,” that real-life bond was immortalized in one of the show’s most brilliant sequences. Forced to operate on a critically wounded soldier at a battalion aid station while both dealing with injuries, Borelli and Hawkeye literally had to work as one—each using their good arm to tie surgical knots and save a life together. It wasn’t just fantastic television; it was a profoundly moving metaphor for a father and son sharing their craft. (To make it even more special, Alan’s brother, Antony Alda, also appeared in the episode, making it a true family affair).

Long before he ever put on a pair of olive drab scrubs, Robert Alda was already a legend of the stage and screen—the original Sky Masterson in Broadway’s Guys and Dolls. He had a massive, celebrated career.

But to MASH* fans, he will always hold a uniquely special place in our hearts. He was the one doctor who could look Hawkeye Pierce in the eye, match him witty remark for witty remark, and command his absolute respect.

Happy heavenly birthday, Robert Alda. Thank you for the immense talent, the incredible legacy, and the unforgettable moments you shared with your family, and with all of us.
