Though she lived a long, full life and passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 87 in May 2025, the news of Loretta Swit’s departure still brought a heavy, quiet sadness to fans all over the world. It felt like losing a member of our own extended family.

To millions, she will forever be Major Margaret Houlihan. When M*A*S*H first premiered, Margaret was written simply as a strict, one-dimensional antagonist.
