It always feels sudden when we lose a beloved icon who has been a part of our lives for so long. Though she lived a long, full life and passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 87 in May 2025, the news of Loretta Swit’s departure still brought a heavy, quiet sadness to fans all over the world. It felt like losing a member of our own extended family.
To millions, she will forever be Major Margaret Houlihan. When M*A*S*H first premiered, Margaret was written simply as a strict, one-dimensional antagonist. But Loretta refused to let her stay that way. She fought for her character’s growth, transforming Margaret into a fiercely capable, deeply vulnerable, and incredibly strong leader. She showed an entire generation of viewers that a woman could command respect in a male-dominated world without ever sacrificing her humanity or her heart.
But her compassion was never limited to the screen.
Off-camera, Loretta possessed a heart of gold that she dedicated to those who couldn’t speak for themselves. She was a tireless champion for animal rights, spending decades advocating, fundraising, and fighting for the welfare of animals, eventually founding her own non-profit, the SwitHeart Animal Alliance. The exact same fierce protectiveness Major Houlihan showed her nurses, Loretta Swit showed to the animals of the world.
She leaves behind an unparalleled television legacy—two Emmy Awards, eleven historic seasons, and a character that genuinely changed the landscape of the medium forever. But even more importantly, she leaves behind a real-world legacy of immense kindness and advocacy.
The canvas tents of the 4077th may be long gone, but the strength, grace, and empathy she brought to the world will never fade.
Thank you for everything, Loretta. You truly were the backbone of the camp. Rest in peace.
