The Phone Call That Silenced a Bully

When Hollywood Rejected Jamie Farr for His Face… David Ogden Stiers Did Something No One Expected

On screen, Charles Emerson Winchester III was arrogance wrapped in a tailored suit.
Cold. Condescending. Always looking down on Klinger.

But off screen?

David Ogden Stiers was the man who protected Jamie Farr when it mattered most.

And this is a behind-the-scenes story very few people know.

After M*A*S*H ended, Jamie Farr went back into the Hollywood grind.

Auditions. Casting rooms. Waiting.

Jamie was — and still is — proud of his Lebanese heritage.
But Hollywood in those days?

It wasn’t always kind to people who looked “different.”

One day, Jamie auditioned for a major role.
He prepared carefully.
Knew the material.
Was ready.

The director barely let him speak.

He glanced at Jamie.
Then at the headshot.
Then said something Jamie would never forget:

“Look, Jamie… we need someone more American-looking.
Your face is… too Middle Eastern.
The audience won’t like it.”

That was it.

No audition.
No chance.
No discussion.

Jamie walked out stunned — rejected not for talent, but for who he was.

Word of the incident eventually reached David Ogden Stiers.

The same man who played the most elitist character on the show.
The same man whose voice sounded like it belonged in a royal court.

But David didn’t offer sympathy.

He offered action.

He picked up the phone and called the director directly.

No one knows the exact words.
But people close to the situation say David used that voice —
the Winchester voice.
Calm. Precise. Absolutely intimidating.

The message was clear:

“You just passed on one of the most talented and professional actors in this business because of your own narrow-minded prejudice.”

Then came the warning:

“If I ever hear that you judge my friend — or any actor — by their background instead of their ability…
I will personally make sure this entire town knows exactly who you are.”

The line went quiet.

David didn’t have to do that.

He could’ve stayed silent.
Protected his own reputation.
Kept industry relationships intact.

But he didn’t.

He chose his friend.

And that’s the part that still hits people in the chest.

Sometimes the strongest ally isn’t the loud one.
Or the obvious one.

Sometimes it’s the person you least expect —
the one who looks cold on the outside
but burns hot when it comes to loyalty.

We remember MAS*H for the laughs.

But we love it for the people behind it. ❤️ Jamie didn’t find out about the phone call right away.

David wasn’t the type to boast.
He didn’t defend his friend for the applause.
He didn’t do it to be a savior.

He did it simply because it was right.

When Jamie finally heard what David had done, he was moved beyond words.
The man who spent years mercilessly mocking Klinger’s dresses and Toledo roots…
had fiercely and quietly defended Jamie’s dignity behind closed doors.

On television, Major Winchester would never lower himself to fight for a lowly corporal.
But in reality, David Ogden Stiers stood incredibly tall for his brother.

Years later, when David passed away in 2018, the world mourned a brilliant, classically trained actor.
But Jamie Farr mourned a protector.
A true, unwavering gentleman.

Hollywood is an industry obsessed with appearances.
With finding the “right look” and fitting into comfortable little boxes.
But David understood something much deeper about human worth.

True nobility isn’t about bloodlines, bank accounts, or where your ancestors came from.
It’s about how you treat people when the cameras stop rolling, and there is absolutely nothing in it for you.

Charles Emerson Winchester III may have been a snob.
But David Ogden Stiers?

He was absolute royalty.
